Theming and nuanced graphical features like transparency were not viable until this rework. Nothing stops the devs from now on to improve on those things.
I cannot name another DAW that can:
- Natively run on Windows, Mac, Linux
- Uses vector graphics to be able to scale the GUI to any monitor size without aliasing
- Is GPU accelerated on Windows, Mac, Linux
As a DAW platform, this foundation is the most future proof. Considering how well third party plugins are supported and the accurate PDC (which was also reworked according to the devs to fix the last bit of latency issues) and the CLAP support which you could argue as niche, you cannot beat a free and open source standard that is superior in terms of features compared to VST2 and VST3, for example multi threading is optimized because the DAW controls the CLAP threads, so your CPU cores can better distribute the work.
In practise, are these things true as well? Is Bitwig really that stable as a DAW for live performance and studio work? Proof is in the pudding and all what I wrote may be moot if real musicians find Bitwig cumbersome to work with.
