To me modern guitar sounds like a seven or 8 string going through a marshal with the mids all the way up and everything else down. All mid range honk like its going through an old shity speaker at a drive through movie theater.

Ahh, I see what you mean now ... the modern metal tone
In a word, it's DSP. Suddenly, everything has crazy, artificial tonal control.
I think a lot of those tones are fun, but only in certain context do I use them for a song.

That said, I tend to prefer the analog equivalent from the 80's. Like the thrash tones of Suicidal Tendencies
