FWIW, since the original posting I have written a custom Midi router that runs on my Macbook pro. It grabs the Linn midi messages, processes the row-col CC and checks against 4 "subgrids" (row start/end, column start/end) and sends the note in a different virtual instrument for each subgrid. It also has an optional switch to make any subgrid output a custom CC instead of passing through the noteOn. This way I can control clip launching in Bitwig by training it on those CCs. On my 2019 Macbook I haven't detected any noticeable change in the performance latency (which I've found I'm very sensitive to, after getting a powerful new Windows laptop which is far worse out of the box than my Mac).
