Yeah the inspector panel is very useful sometimes.
I tend to do this a slightly different way in that I usually add a tool to the end of my FX chain, and use the gain to do my automation. This way I can use the volume control for level and not affect the automation.
..but this still would still need two dots.
Hmm I can't remember l, if you select a range can you shift drag and it will affect only the selected area.. sorry that could be completely from something different...
