Austin, TX. - lived here over 10 years, that's 5 years too long. Movng as soon as I save up enough to.
PROS: Diverse city, GREAT food, especially bbq. Decent scenery and local parks, nice lake not too far off. Winter MIGHT hit 32f/0c on a bad day. Decent public transit. Best live music IN THE WORLD. Austin City Limits festival and South by Southwest. Can open carry a firearm anywhere, thanks to state law. Oh, and cool bats living under a bridge downtown - hooray bat festival! Also excellent hot sauce festival and Pecan Street festival. LOTS of spring/summer/fall festivals.
CONS: Fecking EXPENSIVE - rents went up citywide by an average of 15% last year. Food prices up. Flooding and the occasional tornado. Cops like to shoot unarmed minorities. Being over-run by wannabe cowboys from California and clueless tech companies looking for the cheapest place to set up. Summer temps hit over 105f routinely. Electricity is expensive. Really damn crowded now, traffic is abysmal and reminds me of my time in Silicon Valley. Rent-a-politico government. Can open carry a firearm anywhere, thanks to state law (it's a pro and a con, yes).
All my friends left years ago. Now that my health has improved, I'm out too. Hoping to move near some of my DJ buddies in
Missouri in 2025. Sick of it here, this is NOT the Austin I moved to.
